About Escape the Deep Forest
Escape the Deep Forest is a free survival game you play in your web browser. You crash-land in a forest six kilometres across, with no map, and you have to survive long enough to find a way out.
The idea
The game is built around the feeling of being truly lost in a big wild place. Instead of a path, there is a forest to read: the river tells you which way is south, the moss tells you where the shade is, and the animals tell you what is around you. Food, water, warmth, rest and wounds are all real problems. Every animal has senses, habits and a weak spot. You can win by three different routes, and every run is different, because the world is made from a seed.
What is in it
- A forest six kilometres long with meadows, mixed woodland, pine forest, swamp, cliffs, a river with a waterfall, caves, wrecks and mountains around the edge.
- Twenty-eight kinds of animal, inspired by the forests of Kerala and the Western Ghats in India, from rabbits and squirrels to wolves, bears, king cobras and elephants. They hunt each other as well as you. See the animal guide.
- A survival system with hunger, thirst, temperature, rest, bleeding, infection, broken bones and poison. See the survival guide.
- Crafting, cooking, traps, hunting, fishing, building a base and a pet dog. See the crafting guide.
- Three ways out, eighteen endings, a journal of notes and a daily and weekly challenge. See the escape routes.
How it is made
The game is written in JavaScript with the Three.js 3D library and runs entirely in your browser using WebGL. Nothing is installed on your device. The world, the weather, the animals' behaviour and the survival systems are all computed on your device. Animals and trees are 3D models with skeletons and are animated in code. Sounds are a mix of recordings and sounds generated in the browser. If you sign in, a small amount of progress data is stored with Firebase; read the privacy notice for details. The models and sounds used and their licences are listed on the credits page.
Who is behind it
Escape the Deep Forest is made and run by a single independent developer. It is not made by a studio, and it is not connected to any company. It is updated often, and your reports help: use the contact page to send a bug, a suggestion or a question.
