Escape the Deep Forest

Elephant: facts, danger and how to survive it

The giants of the forest. Cows and calves move in a herd led by an old cow; bulls often wander alone. They flap their ears, raise the trunk and trumpet before they charge.

About the real animal

The Asian elephant lives in family herds of related females and calves, led by the oldest cow, while adult bulls wander alone or in small groups. Elephants communicate by low rumbles that carry for kilometres through the ground as well as the air, and they spend most of the day eating grasses, bark and fruit. When an elephant is alarmed it spreads its ears, raises its trunk and trumpets, and it may make a mock charge. It will not usually attack unless it is cornered, wounded or protecting a calf.

In the game

Elephants are rare and peaceful, but they are stronger than anything you carry. There are bulls, cows and calves. When an elephant spreads its ears, shakes its head and trumpets, it is warning you: back away now. If you stay, it charges. A herd with a calf is the most dangerous. You can walk past an elephant if you stay far away and calm, and you should.
