Escape the Deep Forest

Forest birds: facts, danger and how to survive it

Flocks of small birds. Koels, barbets, bulbuls, babblers and hornbills fill the forest with song at dawn.

About the real animal

The forests of Kerala hold hundreds of bird species. Five of them appear in the game: the house crow, a black, clever scavenger; the common myna, a brown bird with a yellow bill and eye patch that walks about on the ground; the rose-ringed parakeet, a green parrot with a red bill and a long tail that travels in noisy flocks; the white-throated kingfisher, with an electric blue back, a chocolate head and a red bill, which hunts insects, lizards and fish; and the great hornbill, Kerala's state bird, a metre long with a huge yellow bill topped by a casque. The female great hornbill seals herself into a tree hollow to lay her eggs, and the male feeds her through a slit.

In the game

Birds are everywhere in the meadows, forest edges and river banks, and a flock that suddenly flies up tells you that something startled it. They are hard to hit in flight, so wait until one lands. Each bird in the game is one of the five species, chosen at random. Birds are a little food and no danger, but their alarm is useful: when many birds burst from the trees at once, look in that direction.
