Escape the Deep Forest

Rabbit: facts, danger and how to survive it

A small grazer that lives in groups and hides in the grass. It thumps a hind foot as an alarm and freezes before it bolts, zigzagging.

About the real animal

Rabbits and hares are grazers that live on the edges of open ground, close to cover. Their eyes sit high on the sides of the head, which gives them a view of almost the whole circle around them, and their long ears can turn independently to find a sound. When a rabbit senses danger it often freezes first, hoping not to be seen, and then bolts in a zigzag to the nearest hole. Thumping a hind foot on the ground is an alarm signal that other rabbits hear through the soil. Rabbits eat grass, herbs and bark, and reproduce quickly, which is why they are food for foxes, wolves, snakes and birds of prey.

In the game

In the game, rabbits live in small groups in meadows and mixed woodland, and they are active at dawn and dusk. They are the easiest meat in the forest, but they are fast. The best moment to shoot one is when it freezes, just before it bolts. A snare set on a rabbit run is a patient way to catch one without spending an arrow. Foxes, wolves and cougars all hunt them, so a rabbit that suddenly bolts may be running from something you cannot see yet.
