Escape the Deep Forest

Indian crested porcupine: facts, danger and how to survive it

A slow night forager with long banded quills. It rattles them as a warning, then runs backwards into whatever threatens it. The quills cause deep, bleeding wounds.

About the real animal

The Indian crested porcupine is the largest rodent in India. Its back is covered with long black-and-white banded quills, up to about thirty centimetres, and it has a crest of bristles on the nape. It spends the day in a burrow and forages at night for roots, tubers, fruit and bark. When it is threatened it stamps its feet, rattles its hollow tail quills as a warning, raises all its spines and finally runs backwards into the attacker. The quills come out easily and are barbed.
